This (Chapter 6) is a heartbreaking chapter within a heartbreaking story. I found the picture at the bottom of page 54 especially affecting, when Maizie, terrified, is looking up to her aunt for help. The mother’ casual cruelty is hard to watch. Gloria is trying to protect and support Maizie — but is undermining her sister and creating a climate of secrecy which is bound to not end well. Meanwhile Maizie feels responsible for her mother’s job and happiness – all too much for a young child. Excellent depictions of complex and painful family dynamics among well-meaning people who each bring their own flaws to the situation. I love the scribbly hair and eyes; excellent artwork and storytelling. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
A 7-year old girl is bored and getting in trouble out of boredom. She goes home to find an unfamiliar woman sitting in her living room. Imagination, mishaps and even more family complications ensue.
